Clicks from Google are falling across most UK sites, and the monthly report is where that decline lands first. A chart with a downward line reaches a director or finance lead, and the question that follows is what the budget is now paying for.
Answering that question starts with separating three causes: changes to how the data is collected, changes to the results page, and a genuine loss of rankings or demand. Once the cause is clear, the report opens with leads, revenue and cost per acquisition, and uses visibility and demand data to explain the movement underneath.
Key takeaways
- 69.5% of UK Google searches ended without a click between January and April 2026, the highest rate of six markets measured by SparkToro.
- Click-through rate falls whenever impressions grow faster than clicks, so a falling CTR can sit alongside stable or improving performance.
- Search Console impressions before 12 September 2025 included rank tracker and scraper activity, and year-on-year comparisons are like-for-like again from late September 2026.
- Search Console’s Generative AI report, live for all sites since 31 August 2026, shows AI Overview and AI Mode impressions with no clicks or queries.
- GA4’s AI Assistant channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode, which still count as organic search, so the channel understates AI-driven visits.
- Reports for budget holders open with leads, revenue and cost per acquisition, followed by demand and visibility.
Why are clicks falling in 2026?
Between January and April 2026, 69.5% of UK Google searches ended without a click, according to SparkToro’s analysis of Similarweb clickstream data. That is the highest rate of the six markets measured, against 68.0% in the US and 62.1% in Germany. The panel excludes the Google mobile app, which SparkToro expects to show a higher rate still.
Ahrefs compared desktop click-through rates for 300,000 keywords between December 2023 and December 2025, and found that an AI Overview correlates with a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults across 68,879 searches in March 2025: users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared and 15% when one did not, and clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits.
Informational queries carry most of this exposure. A US search agency’s 2026 study of 53 brands found AI Overviews on 36% of informational queries, 8% of commercial queries and 5% of transactional queries. Roar’s guide to how Google AI Overviews work explains how those answers choose their sources.
Branded searches, local business queries and high-intent transactional searches continue to send clicks to websites, according to SparkToro. Google’s head of Search said in August 2025 that organic click volume was relatively stable year on year, without publishing the figures behind the claim.
Is the drop real or a measurement change?
Clicks fall for three reasons: Google changes how the data is collected, the results page answers the query before anyone clicks, or rankings and demand drop. Every report should name the cause before it recommends a fix.
Search Console impressions fell in September 2025 because Google stopped supporting the &num=100 parameter on 12 September, which removed impressions generated by rank trackers and scrapers and raised average position on the same date. Year-on-year comparisons that cross that date overstate impression loss. Comparisons from late September 2026 onwards are like-for-like again.
GA4 added a native AI Assistant channel on 13 May 2026, moving sessions from ChatGPT, Gemini and other recognised chatbots out of Referral and into their own line. Referral falls as a result, with no change in underlying traffic. Clicks from Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode sit outside that channel and still count as organic search, so the AI Assistant figure understates AI-driven visits.
A results-page change leaves a consistent pattern in Search Console: rankings hold, impressions hold or rise, and clicks fall, concentrated on informational queries. Comparing the Performance report against the Generative AI report shows which pages are being read in AI Overviews and AI Mode without being visited.
A genuine loss shows up in several places at once: average position falls on priority queries, impressions fall with it, branded search demand softens and leads drop across channels. When all four move together, the problem sits with rankings or demand, and the fix is SEO, content or media work.
Why is CTR a misleading headline metric?
Click-through rate divides clicks by impressions, so it falls whenever impressions grow faster than clicks, including when visibility improves. A US search agency’s 2026 study tracked 53 brands across 5.47 million queries and 2.43 billion organic impressions between January 2025 and February 2026. Between September and October 2025, informational queries where the brand was cited in an AI Overview went from 15,797,234 to 33,100,739 impressions, while clicks moved from 398,798 to 400,271. CTR fell from 2.52% to 1.21% with clicks unchanged.
The same study found cited pages earned 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited pages on the same results page, and 38% fewer than pages on results with no AI Overview. On queries without an AI Overview, organic CTR rose from 2.75% in January 2025 to 3.82% in February 2026. The authors note that higher-authority brands are also more likely to be cited, so the citation effect is a correlation.
Clicks and impressions belong in the report as separate lines, with CTR as a diagnostic beneath them.
What should a marketing report lead with now?
A report built for the people who sign off budget opens with commercial outcomes, follows with demand and closes with visibility. Outcomes show what the marketing produced, demand shows whether the market is choosing the brand, and visibility explains why the first two moved.
| Layer | Question it answers | Metrics |
|---|---|---|
| Outcomes | Is the marketing producing revenue? | Key events, qualified leads, pipeline value, revenue, cost per acquisition |
| Demand | Is the market choosing the brand? | Branded search impressions and clicks, direct traffic, returning users |
| Visibility | Is the brand being seen where buyers look? | Impressions and rankings by topic, AI Overview and AI Mode impressions, AI citation rates, sessions and clicks |
For estate agencies, the outcome line is valuation requests and instructions by branch, which ties search and paid activity to the figure a regional director already tracks. Sessions and clicks sit in the visibility layer as supporting evidence for the outcome figures.
How do different channels behave when search clicks fall?
Organic search carries the results-page effects described above, and informational content carries most of them. Paid search has moved on a different path. In the same US agency study, paid CTR on queries with an AI Overview rose from 14.64% in January 2025 to 16.21% in February 2026, while paid CTR on queries without one fell from 25.98% to 21.85%.
Across informational queries in 2025, brands cited in the AI Overview averaged a 15.74% paid CTR, against 11.19% for brands that were not cited. Reporting paid media by query type, with AI Overview queries separated from clean results pages, stops a blended CTR from hiding both movements.
Email, CRM and direct traffic sit outside the results page entirely, which makes them a control group for search. Enquiries from email and direct holding steady while organic clicks fall points to a results-page change, and all channels falling together points to a shift in demand.
How do you measure AI visibility without clicks?
Google announced Search Console’s Generative AI performance reports on 3 June 2026 and rolled them out to all websites worldwide on 31 August 2026. The Search report shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date, and the same impressions remain inside the main Performance report.
The report shows no clicks and no queries, and Google sets a minimum impression threshold before it appears. The data is not yet available through the Search Console API, so exports run manually from the interface.
GA4’s AI Assistant channel counts sessions from recognised chatbots that pass a readable referrer, and sessions without one land elsewhere, typically in Direct. Combined with the exclusion of AI Overviews and AI Mode, the channel gives a floor for AI-driven traffic.
Visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity sits outside both Google tools. Prompt-level tracking covers it: a fixed set of buyer prompts run each month, recording whether the brand is mentioned, cited or recommended and which competitors appear alongside it. Roar runs this through Search Radar, and the trend over several months is the reportable figure. Once citation rates are measured, AI search visibility work targets the prompts where competitors are named and the brand is absent.
How do you explain a falling click line to the people who sign off budget?
The report opens with outcomes for the period, set against the same period last year and the target. A board reads enquiries, revenue and cost per acquisition first, so the click chart that follows is read as context for those figures.
Every chart carries annotations for the dates that changed the data: 12 September 2025 for the Search Console impression reset, 13 May 2026 for the GA4 AI Assistant channel and 31 August 2026 for the Generative AI report. Comparison periods avoid crossing the September 2025 reset, or state where they do.
Impressions and clicks sit on the same chart, with AI Overview impressions alongside them, so a director sees visibility holding while clicks fall. The commentary names the cause from the diagnostic, states what it means for revenue and sets out the next three actions.
Frequently asked questions
How do you measure brand awareness?
Brand awareness is measured through branded search demand, direct traffic, share of voice and AI citation rates, tracked as monthly trends. Branded impressions and clicks in Search Console show how many people search for the brand by name. Share of voice compares visibility for category queries against named competitors. Prompt tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity shows how often AI answers mention the brand. A “how did you hear about us” field on enquiry forms adds evidence analytics platforms cannot capture.
What is a good click through rate?
A good click-through rate depends on ranking position and whether an AI Overview appears on the results page. Ahrefs measured an average position-one desktop CTR of 3.9% for informational keywords without an AI Overview in December 2025, and 1.6% for keywords with one. A US search agency’s 2025 data across 53 brands put average organic CTR on informational queries at 3.35% with no AI Overview, 2.07% when the brand was cited and 0.94% when it was not. The site’s own history is the most useful benchmark.
What is marketing attribution?
Marketing attribution assigns credit for a conversion to the channels and touchpoints that led to it. GA4’s default model shares credit across touchpoints based on the property’s own conversion paths, and its last-click models give all credit to the final touchpoint. Last-click reporting undervalues organic search and AI visibility, because both influence buyers earlier in the journey. CRM data and self-reported source fields on enquiry forms fill gaps analytics platforms cannot see.
How do you measure SEO success?
SEO success is measured by the leads, revenue and cost per acquisition that organic search produces. Key events in GA4, matched to CRM records, show which organic landing pages generate enquiries and sales. Branded search demand and Search Console impressions for priority topics show whether visibility is growing ahead of those outcomes. Rankings and traffic support the picture, and the commercial figures decide whether the work is paying back.
Why is my organic traffic dropping?
Organic traffic drops because of measurement changes, results-page features answering queries directly, or lost rankings and demand. Google’s removal of the &num=100 parameter on 12 September 2025 cut reported Search Console impressions. Ahrefs found AI Overviews correlate with a 58% lower position-one click-through rate, comparing December 2023 with December 2025. Stable rankings with falling clicks point to the results page, and falling rankings, impressions and branded demand together point to a genuine loss.
How do you track AI Overview traffic?
Clicks from AI Overviews cannot be isolated in any Google tool, because GA4 counts them as organic search and Search Console’s Generative AI report shows impressions only. The Generative AI report, available to all sites since 31 August 2026, lists which pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Comparing those pages against click trends in the main Performance report shows where AI visibility is rising and clicks are falling on the same URLs.
What is zero click search?
A zero-click search is a search that ends on the results page without a click to any website. Between January and April 2026, 69.5% of UK Google searches ended this way, according to SparkToro’s analysis of Similarweb data, the highest of six markets measured. AI Overviews, featured snippets, knowledge panels and local packs all answer queries on the page. Branded, local and transactional searches continue to send clicks to websites.
What is share of voice in marketing?
Share of voice is a brand’s share of visibility in its market, measured against named competitors. In search, it combines rankings and impressions for a defined keyword set, paid impression share and citation rates in AI answers. Tracked monthly, it shows whether a brand is gaining or losing ground independent of overall search demand, which makes it a stable measure while clicks fall.
Tracking the same measures every month
Reporting this way depends on tracking the same outcomes, demand and visibility measures every month across search, paid and AI platforms, against competitors as well as last year. Benchmarking reports from Roar track all three for multi-location and enterprise brands.
